The Crisis No One Talks About

At 18, the System Drops Them.

On their 18th birthday, thousands of foster youth are handed a trash bag, or a small piece of luggage if they're lucky, containing everything they own, and told "Good luck." Many have no family to turn to, no place to go, and no support system left. Once they age out of care, caseworkers are often no longer required to help, and calls may go unanswered. They are left to navigate adulthood completely on their own.

Brianna's Journey

A Timeline of Need, Survival, and Hope

🚪
Age 6

Entering Care

Brianna enters the foster care system with only the clothes on her back. She has no personal belongings, no sense of stability, and no clear understanding of what comes next. This moment marks the beginning of uncertainty, displacement, and survival.

📚
Age 8

Early School Years

Brianna begins elementary school trying to adjust to constant change. She often arrives without proper clothing, school supplies, or essentials. She struggles to focus in class because her attention is on basic needs that are still unmet.

🎒
Age 11

Transition to Middle School

As Brianna enters middle school, the gap between her and her peers becomes more visible. She doesn't have the right clothes, supplies, or consistent support system. Social isolation begins to grow, and confidence starts to decline as she tries to navigate adolescence without stability.

💔
Age 13

Emotional Strain Deepens

The instability of her environment begins to take a deeper emotional toll. Brianna begins to withdraw, struggling with self worth, identity, and belonging. School becomes more difficult not because of ability, but because of unmet needs outside the classroom.

🤝
Age 15

First Connection to Support

Brianna is introduced to community based support through mentorship and youth programming. For the first time, she is surrounded by consistency, encouragement, and people who invest in her growth. She begins to see what stability can look like.

🌟
Age 17

Growth and Confidence

With ongoing support, Brianna starts to rebuild confidence. She becomes more engaged in school, begins setting goals, and participates in leadership opportunities. She is no longer just surviving. She is beginning to thrive.

🎓
Age 18

Stepping Into Her Future

Brianna prepares for adulthood with guidance, resources, and a support system she once lacked. While her early years were marked by instability, she now moves forward with direction, hope, and opportunity.

Why This Matters

Brianna's story reflects the reality for many young people who experience foster care, poverty, and instability. Without consistent support, small gaps like clothing, school supplies, or mentorship become long-term barriers.

This is why Promise Youth Foundation exists.

  • •To step into those gaps early.
  • •To provide stability, resources, and mentorship.
  • •To ensure a child's future is not defined by their circumstances, but by their potential.
